Books…More Books…

Standard

Oh, did you think it would just be prompts and not much more this month here on Alyce?

Nope.  I have too much to do…and I don’t want to schedule these posts for November since I am working on them now.

We went to the thrift store recently and here is what I picked up.  I wish I had gotten more.  But, this is enough to get me started…

New altered books waiting to be made…

The plan is to make a bunch of altered junque-type journals to sell in the coming year.  I can hear you ask–why the coming year when the holidays are coming soon.

Well, because I am not promising anything before the new year because I can’t be sure I can do it all in time.

I will consider special orders and special requests though…if you have an idea, shoot me an email here and we’ll talk.  I can take on some projects, but not a ton right now.

The idea of trying to make a bunch of things to have on-hand to sell…I can’t manage that right now.  I will get there; I just need to do things in my own time as I am healing from surgery.

Having said all that, as I do create new books, I will make walk-through videos so you can see what’s going on…and I will try to keep my glitter crow faery dust thing to a minimum, as I can, if I can.

Emergence….

After doing 29 Faces last month, I guess I wanted a break from doing faces…

This is just one of the weird mythical flowers I draw all the time…

Mixed media background.  Acrylic paints.  Charcoal.  The clear gesso.  Colored pencil.

Alluvium…

Journal52 gives out two (free) prompts per week…this is my response to Sarah Trumpp’s prompt this week: strange word.

In the original post, Sarah linked up an amazing list of words…and I swear I did not simply stop at the A’s…I went up and down that list, several times, but I always came back to this one word…alluvium…unconsolidated sediments carried by water…the mermaid in me wanted to play with this one…

As I played with collage and paints and splatters and drips…what I had originally intended did not really fit…so I went with what was happening instead…even the little leaf face in there…

The word alluvium appears many many times in the background of this spread…and yet, the main thought, the main thrust of this spread is: float…

Isn’t that what all the detritus is doing?  Floating away on the waters…?

Word Of The Year, First Official Spread Of 2016

This is an interesting spread for me.  Working up the background wasn’t so difficult.  I wanted the focal images–the trees and the face–to be free, open, scribblly even–little did I know.

I grabbed my trusty Bic Cristal black pen…and I actually scratched in the forms very quickly.

Then I added colors…charcoal, paints, colored pencils, a bit of marker…then I sprayed it with a matte varnish…and got ticked.

There should be five distinct designs in those trees.  I put them there myself.

That pen line straight down the center of the face–I worked hard to eradicate and hide that line–and it was gone…until the sealant hit it…

So…oh well…I feel good and I got my point across…

I had fun here.  Eyes bigger than the face.  Lots of layers.  Pen scribbles clearly showing through…it was fun…

Now–trees…what do trees have to do with Deepen…

Have you ever heard of the Dig Tree?

A few years ago, Soul Cafe Food was my lifeline…the site may not be active anymore — or maybe it is and I am no longer there to notice– but I still return to peruse and wander…I am still inspired there to write and to create…I am eternally grateful to Heather Blakey, as well as all the other artists that I met on my journeys there.
